Camera Shots
Music videos tend to include many long shots, close ups and mid shots. These are used to create emphasis on the artist, location and emotions. Close ups can also reflect the lyrics when you can see the artist singing.
Camera Movement
The movement of the camera is used to follow the artist/band in the music video. Certain camera movements are: tilts, pans, tracking and crane shots.
Mise en Scene
The mise en scene of a music video is the arrangement of the performers and the props in the shots. It puts importance on the representation of something. Iconography is something thought of many times when considering the mise en scene because it is symbolic.
Editing
Cuts are the most commonly used editing technique in music videos. This is something I discovered when analysing previous music videos. Cuts are very sudden and they allow one scene to change quickly into another. Other techniques used in music videos are fade and dissolve which create a different effect to cuts.
Lighting
Lighting is a huge effect in music videos because it can make them look completely different. For example, a video in black and white or a sepia effect can make it look more dated.
Costume
The costume is related to the scenes and the genre of the music video. The artists will be dressed according to the genre and it also influences other what other people dress like too.
