Evaluation: Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We also gained more audience feedback from posting out final cut onto a social networking site called 'Facebook'. This allowed other friends and family to view the music video and make there own opinions. This was also a fast and efficient way to gain feedback from our target audience without anybody having to go out of their way.

Evaluation: Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media technologies have been extremely important to us throughout the entire coursework. I could not imagine how we could have done any of this without technology. All of the technologies in the slideshow above have been vital in all of the stages of this coursework. In the following slideshow, I am going to explain how I used each of these media technologies.

Evaluation: Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before we could use existing media conventions within our music video, it was important that we identified the genre of the music which we were using to discover the style of music video that would suit it. Therefore, the conventions which we had to look into were those of a Pop Rock
music genre. We found that these conventions were:

  • The lighting was often quite dark
  • There were often desaturated shots
  • Many different camera angles were used
  • Many of them are live performances
  • The clothing is quite casual
  • There are often close ups displaying emotion
  • The pace of the music fits closely with the editing
  • A cameo can be commonly used

Furthermore, we considered other music conventions which famous theorists believes make up a music video:

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

  • A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
  • A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
  • Genre-related style and iconography present.
  • Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
  • Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
  • Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visu
als and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.

Steve Archer's Theory

  • There needs to be a strong and coherent relationship between narrative and performance in music promos
  • Music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the band
  • A carefully choreographed dance might be part of the artist's performance or an extra aspect of the video designed to aid visualisation and the 'repeatability' factor.

John Stewart's Theory

  • The music video has the aesthetics of a TV commercial, with lots of close-ups and lighting being used to focus on the star’s face.
  • He sees visual reference in music video as coming from a range of sources, although the three most frequent are perhaps cinema, fashion and art photography.
  • Stewart’s description of the music video as ‘incorportating, raiding and reconstructing’ is essentially the essence of Intertextuality, using something with which the audience may be familiar, to generate both nostalgic associations and new meanings.
  • The video allows more access to the performer than a stage performance can. The mise-en-scene, in particular, can be used to emphasise an aspirational lifestyle.

Sigmund Freud's Theory

  • Refers to the notion that erotic pleasure may be gained by looking at a sexual object (preferably when the object is unaware of being watched).

Laura Mulvey's Theory

  • Because film-makers are predominantly male, the presence of women in films is often solely for the purposes or display (rather than for narrative purposes).
  • The purpose of this displace is to facilitate a voyeuristic response in spectators, which presumes a 'male gaze' one that is a powerful controlling gaze at the female on display, who is effectively objectified and passive.

These theories have greatly effected the choices that we have made for o
ur music video.

Conventions of Music Video's

Our Music Video...

Close ups...

The use of close ups in our music video is to portray the emotion of the characters. In the two shots below you can clearly see the emphasis on the two characters feelings.

Editing...

In this particular part of the music video we have desaturated the shots because the shot is meant to be an activity of the past. Therefore, by changing the shot to be in black and white it makes it seem dated. We have decided to desaturate a few shots as there are many flashbacks to the past throughout the music video to portray how the relationship used to be.

Time Passing...

The Dream...

The dream was a sequence of shots in the woods. The character is having a nightmare about her previous boyfriend and her current boyfriend. When I edited this section it was important to make the shots actually look dream like. Therefore, using a bit of initiative, we researched on the internet what common effects are used to portray this.

The dark edge effect makes the shot seem like a vision and as if it
is not real. This is the effect we were hoping for to make this piece of filming appear different to the rest of the music video. To add to this effect, during the editing of these shots I made the shot slightly brighter and distorted to again make this part of the music video seem unreal.

Correlation between lyrics and visuals...

As you can see from the slideshow below, there are a few shots that relate to the lyrics being sung at the time.

When we created our storyboard for the music video, firstly we considered what the lyrics meant as a group before deciding what the music video was even going to be about. Therefore, it was important for us to emphasise some of the lyrics in the song, for example, the phrase which is most common "Halfway Gone" which is the title of the song. When these lyrics are sung, most of the time we wanted to show one of the characters in the video leaving.

Ancillary Tasks

As you can see from our finished ancillary tasks, many conventions are similar between our product and the real media products. After looking at other real existing media products, we were able to think of features ourself which we could include. The research we did influenced us in creating the following products:

Creating the Music Video

The music video in the making...

These are some of the step I took to editing the music video in Final Cut Express.

The first screen grab shows how I created the dark edges for the dream sequence. The darker softer edges of each shot make the sequence seem more like a dream because it looks unreal and like a vision. This edging only appears throughout the dream sequence which makes it more obvious because it is different to the rest of the music video.

This screenshot shows you how I sped up a clip and reversed the shot. Originally this piece of filming was light changing to darkness, however to make sense in the music video we needed the filming reversed so it played darkness to light. Therefore, by ticking the reverse box I could do this. Furthermore, the original clip played for over 40 minutes but we needed to reduce the length of this clip without cutting some of the footage out because it would not flow as it should. To do this I simply had to increase the percentage of the speed. To speed up the clip enough the percentage ending up at 40106.79% which reduced the speed to just over 3 seconds.

This next image is of the beginning of the video where I added the music feature which was created by Rach and Jake on Photoshop. To add the image I had to import it into Final Cut Express and then drag it into the sequence above the clip where I wanted it to appear. This music feature made the video look more realistic to a viewer and informed them of the name of the artist and the song.

This next shot is a part of the past sequences. It displays how the couple used to be before the constant arguments. I wanted these shots to be in black and white so I desaturated the shots to make them seem more dated. Therefore, this screenshot shows you how I desaturated the images.

Once I had created the main sequence of the video I had to add some transitions to make the shots flow into one another when necessary. When the music is slower, I have used more transitions because they are more suited to the slow pace, however when the chorus begins there are many more quick cuts in the sequence.

This is one of the transitions which I have used. It is a cross dissolve which has been stretched over most of the two different shots so that the characters appear as if they are in the same shot for a few seconds.

This shot seemed rather bright compared to the dull desaturated shot it followed on from. Therefore I had to adjust the brightness and contrast to make it match the previous shot slightly without desaturating the shot.

This is another shot which I had to adjust the brightness on to make the shots seem brighter throughout the dream and less realistic. It also made the shots seem different to the other ones in the music video.

Music Video Feature

We decided to create a video music feature for the beginning of our music video. This would display the name of the artist and the song to benefit the viewer. This is a convention that a real media music video would use. From watching MTV and Viva music channels, we discovered this feature and its common appearance.

Here is our music video feature:

The first stage of creating this feature was to create a black rectangular background on Photoshop. Then the music video features could be added singularly.

Creating the Poster

Here are some of the staged which created the poster advertisement.

Once the cloudy background had been created for the poster advertisement Rach decided to add a lens flare effect to the background which she was able to place and edit the brightness.

Once the text was added to the background, Rach decided to add a drop shadow effect to the text to emphasise it and make it look more defined.

This screenshot below shows how Rach made the image of the hands black and white. She opened the black and white option and changed the colours to edit the image. The black and white effect on the image suited the background much better and being able to preview the image before keeping the changes meant the colour change could be monitored.

Risk Assessment

What potential hazzards could be encountered?
  1. Weather - Some of are filming would be filmed outside, and if for example the weather is raining/snowing etc maybe we would have to re-arrange the date in which we film.
  2. Filming in Millie's/Jake's house, damage to the house during fights between the couple. Objects may be in the way when we are filming and we may not want them there.
  3. Getting to the location can be a problem for some of us in the group.
  4. Conflict within the group. For example if we were to disagree on something.
How would we resolve this problem?
  1. Check the weather report make sure its a suitable time to film outside if need be.
  2. Make sure we move the objects that are in the way and make sure that there is no damage to the house.
  3. Plan well ahead and try and sort out transport, so filming can take place.
  4. Make sure everyones views are heard, and discuss professionally which idea is the best for the group.

Rough Cut Feedback

Here is the feedback that we were given after the screening of our rough cut.

Poster Advertisement Research

For a part of our Ancillary task, our group have decided to design a poster for a magazine advertisement. This advertisement will be promoting our music video and release of the single. We have researched a few posters which could influence the design of our poster.

In both posters, the artist is in the center of the page because they are solo artists this is an easier way to promote the artist. The names of the artists as well as the title of the song are emphasised in bold bright colours which stand out off the poster. These posters have nice features which we have also decided to use in our poster, for example; the stars on the Ellie Goulding poster and the central positioning too.

Filming - Day 3

After editing the filming done from the other two sessions, we were able to clearly see what else needed to be filmed for our video and what needed to be re-filmed. Our third filming was a quite a successful day, more than our second session. We got a lot of filming done using the list we had made which we could edit in the next lesson. However, we probably did not finish the filming and we reckon we will probably have to film one last time.

Filming - Day 2

On the 12th December, more filming took place at Millie's house. Jake and Millie began filming the two main characters, Jon and Hannah. The day was quite productive because the characters learnt to feel more comfortable with each other throughout the day. However, after looking at the footage there was not much that will be useful except for a few small shots that will slot in here and there. We are due to do another full day of filming in a weeks time where we hope to get most of the filming done and ready to edit.

Digipak Research

A Digipak is the packaging of a compact disc or dvd. The packaging to likely to include the following features:

  • Band, Song and Record label logos
  • Titles - Band, song/album name
  • Track Listing
  • Copyright protection logos
  • Barcode and price
  • Age certifiction and Parental Advisory
  • Pictures on each page
  • Limited edition options - Bonus Tracks, Uncut versions ans exclusive extras

Here are some Digipak covers which relate to our music video.

Whilst filming, we have been taking photos to use for our digipak. We took pictures of our main characters together and apart so that we have a choice of the style of picture we would want to use on our Digipak. During our filming we took loads of pictures to use for the cover of our Digipak, these pictures helped us to create a clear layout of the Digipak and decide on what further features we would use.

Filming - Day One

Yesterday we started filming the first part of our music video. We planned to film at Millie's house as it was the most appropriate for a few scenes in he music video and this is where it took place. In total we needed three characters for the whole music video but for this bit of filming we only needed one which was Jon because there are a few scenes where Jon is alone so we did not see the point in having all the characters there.
We managed to get all of the filming done which we had planned to do and we found some of it to be successful, however we knew before we began filming that not all of it would be good enough to use in our final music video because of it being the first time. Some shots were not straight and some were either too close or too far away. The camera also make Jon's suit look green despite it actually being grey however this was not a huge issue.
